Grounding

As we begin to move out of winter and into Spring can you feel the energy in the air start to pick up? I know a lot of people have said to me in the past week that they feel that sense of awakening, things are happening, energy is moving, and intentions are blooming. This transition from the quiet yin energy of winter into the louder and more intense yang energy of Summer can feel a little overwhelming if you’re not feeling prepared, or balanced.

This week in my classes we worked on strengthening and bringing awareness to the Muladhara Chakra. If you’re not familiar with chakras basically they are your energy centers that control certain aspects of your character, the way you relate to yourself, to other people, and to the world around you. If one of your main energy centers is weak or out of alignment this can affect the balance that you experience in your day to day life.

The Muladhara chakra, or the root chakra, is located at the base of the spine and controls your ability to trust yourself, and the way that you respond to fear- it’s basically your fight or flight response to things. This is the foundation that the rest of your chakras, and your practice, are rooted in.

To quickly realign and ground yourself practice sitting up nice and tall with the palms face down on the knees and taking several long deep breaths. Notice the quality of the breath. Try to focus on increasing the length of the breath as opposed to the volume of the breath. Observe it, as you breathe in relaxation, breathe out tension. Start to repeat a mantra to yourself, breathe in security, breathe out fear. Breathe in confidence, breathe out limitation. Repeat the phrase ‘I am safe, I secure, I am grounded. Repeat for as long as necessary.
